This 1984 photograph shows the Gold State Coach at the Royal Mews, standing in the doorway of the State Coach House with its extraordinary gilded carving fully exposed to view. The coach’s elaborate bodywork is packed with sculptural detail, including a large crown above the roof, richly worked panels, heavy gilded ornament and the dramatic marine-inspired front with tritons and swirling decoration. Built in 1762 to transport British monarchs, the coach was designed by William Chambers and made by the coachmaker Samuel Butler; it remains one of the grandest vehicles in the Royal Collection and has been used at every coronation since that of William IV in 1831. In this image, the open doors, brickwork and stable-yard setting make it feel less like a ceremonial object on parade and more like a working part of the royal transport system, briefly seen behind the scenes at Buckingham Palace.
