A 1977 view of the Gloucester Hotel on King William Walk, decorated for the Queen’s Silver Jubilee celebrations. Standing opposite Greenwich Park and just a short stroll from the National Maritime Museum, the building has been a local landmark since the late 19th century. For decades it served as a traditional hotel and public house for visitors to Greenwich, benefitting from its prime position at the edge of the park and beside the historic streets leading down to the river. In later years the building was refurbished and rebranded as the Greenwich Tavern, though much of its original Victorian character — gables, brickwork, and bay windows — remains intact. This photograph captures the hotel at a moment of patriotic festivity, just before the wave of redevelopment and regeneration that transformed Greenwich in the 1980s and 1990s.
