This 1976 photograph shows The Dickens Inn at St Katharine Docks, its timber gallery fronts and flower-lined balconies overlooking the cobbled quayside during the early years of the docks’ reinvention as a leisure marina. At right is the steam drifter Lydia Eva, a striking survivor of the East Anglian herring fleet, which remained here until the 1990s. The inn itself was created from an older late-18th-century warehouse structure that was reconstructed at St Katharine Docks during the redevelopment of the site, giving the waterside a deliberately historic character at a moment when much of the surrounding dockland had only recently been cleared or transformed. More than just a marina scene, the image captures St Katharine Docks in 1976 as old maritime London was being repackaged for a new era of pubs, preserved vessels and visitors.
