A view of The Dickens Inn in 1976, shortly after its reconstruction on the redeveloped St Katharine Docks waterfront. The building had only recently been reassembled from the salvaged timbers of an 18th-century warehouse that once stood elsewhere on the site, its new brick base and freshly painted galleries clearly visible here before the landscaping and cobbled quayside were complete. Behind the hoardings, demolition and clearance work continues on the old St Katharine’s estate housing blocks — a reminder of how extensive the redevelopment programme was during the 1970s as the derelict docks were reshaped into a marina, residential complex, and leisure district. This photograph captures the area mid-transformation: the Dickens Inn freshly reborn, while the remnants of post-war London still linger just beyond the fence.
