A quiet street scene in Lichfield, looking along The Close in the mid/late 1950s, with the stone flank of Lichfield Cathedral dominating the left-hand side of the frame. The cathedral precinct has long been one of the city’s most distinctive areas, characterised by its broad pavements, formal layout, and imposing ecclesiastical architecture.
Parked at the kerb is a 1954 Humber Hawk, a solid and respectable family saloon typical of mid-1950s Britain, while a lone pedestrian walks past the cathedral wall. The restrained traffic, uncluttered street furniture and absence of modern signage give the scene a calm, almost timeless quality.
Much of The Close remains recognisable today, making this image a valuable record of Lichfield’s cathedral quarter before later traffic management and conservation changes.
