The Cat and Fiddle Inn at Hinton Admiral, photographed in the 1950s, showing the long, low thatched roadside building set against woodland on the edge of the New Forest. The inn’s deep thatched roof, small casement windows and white-painted posts reflect its origins as a traditional coaching and rural stopping place.
Parked outside is an Austin A35, a popular small family car of the decade, reinforcing the post-war rise of motoring and the role of country pubs as destinations for day-trippers and touring motorists. The Cat and Fiddle was well known for serving travellers along the Lyndhurst Road, linking Southampton with the New Forest and Bournemouth.
The building survives today, making this image a valuable record of the inn’s mid-20th-century appearance before later alterations and changes in road traffic patterns.
