This authentic 1970s color photograph, captured in 1974, documents the famous Castaways resort located on Collins Avenue in Sunny Isles, North Miami, Florida. The archival image showcases the resort’s unique Oriental-themed architecture, including the massive wooden Shinto-style torii gate that served as the main entrance and the “Pagoda” wing featuring blue decorative panels with gold Chinese characters. The scene highlights the bustling atmosphere of “Motel Row,” with the “Office” and “Registration” areas visible under wide, low-slung eaves. The parking lot is a time capsule of the era, featuring a variety of period-correct vehicles such as a white Ford Pinto, a red Chevrolet Nova, and a blue Mercury Comet. Pedestrians in mid-seventies summer fashion are seen walking near the JCT 826 road sign. Originally opened in the 1950s, The Castaways was one of the most famous and eccentric destinations in South Florida, known for its Wreck Bar and legendary live entertainment. Sadly, the resort was demolished in the early 1980s to make way for high-rise luxury condominiums.
