The building that now houses The Blackbird was once a Midland Bank, its high ceilings, strong stone exterior, and large windows hinting at its financial past. In 1994, Fuller’s converted the former bank into a pub, carefully retaining its imposing features while giving it the warmth of a classic English alehouse. In 2019, nine boutique hotel rooms were added upstairs, turning The Blackbird into one of Fuller’s increasingly popular pub-with-rooms venues.
Its exterior – painted striking black with bright flower baskets – makes it instantly recognisable. Inside, you’ll find dark wood panelling, etched glass, and a large central bar that reflects the best of Victorian pub design.
The Blackbird is a proud Fuller’s Ale & Pie House, with real ale at its core. Signature brews like London Pride, ESB, and Oliver’s Island are poured alongside seasonal guest ales and craft options. It’s a regular entry in CAMRA’s Good Beer Guide, appreciated for both the quality of its cask ales and the consistency of its service.
The menu features traditional British comfort food – homemade meat pies, sausage and mash, fish and chips, and a solid Sunday roast. The pub’s fish and chips in particular have earned praise for their quality, and it’s a popular spot for a relaxed meal whether you’re staying overnight or just passing through.
