View of The Barbican in Sandwich in 1956, showing the distinctive medieval gatehouse spanning the road at the southern end of the town. Built largely in the 14th century as part of Sandwich’s defences, the Barbican once controlled access to the port and guarded the bridge over the River Stour.
By the mid-20th century the structure had long outlived its defensive role, instead framing everyday street life. A delivery tricycle and bicycles pause beneath the arch, while a small saloon car waits to the left, illustrating how medieval architecture had been quietly adapted to accommodate modern traffic. Much of the surrounding streetscape remains recognisable today, making this a valuable record of Sandwich before later conservation and traffic changes.
