A 1976 view of The Anchor, the famous riverside pub on Park Street, just a short walk from Borough Market and Southwark Bridge. The building seen here is only one part of a site with a remarkably long history: a tavern has stood on or near this spot since at least the early 17th century, serving river workers, merchants, and later theatregoers from the nearby Bankside playhouses. Samuel Pepys even mentioned stopping at an inn here while watching the Great Fire of London in 1666. In the 1970s it still had a wonderfully timeworn, slightly ramshackle charm before later refurbishments and the dramatic redevelopment of the Bankside area. Today The Anchor survives as a Grade II listed pub, but this image captures it in a far more atmospheric and less polished era.
