This 1984 view shows The Albert on the corner of Victoria Street and Bressenden Place, a richly detailed Victorian pub standing out against the darker modern office blocks that had grown up around it by the late twentieth century. The building’s brickwork, cast-iron balconies, gilded roofline lettering and Chef & Brewer branding all help give it a distinctly older London character, while the ground-floor fascia still advertises it as a Tavern and Restaurant. Black cabs, pedestrians and the heavy traffic junction in front place the scene firmly in busy central Westminster, and the contrast between the ornate nineteenth-century pub and the redeveloped commercial surroundings is much of what makes the photograph so striking. It is a strong record of one of Victoria’s surviving historic pubs at a time when much of the district around it had already been rebuilt.
