This authentic 1960s colour photograph captures the historic industrial skyline of Rotherhithe as seen from the River Thames in 1969. The scene is dominated by the massive brick structure of the Thames Tunnel Mills, a prominent flour mill that has since been converted into residential apartments. To the left of the mills stands the famous Mayflower pub, a historic inn marking the site where the Mayflower ship departed in 1620 on route to Plymouth and then the USA. Rising above the warehouses is the elegant white spire of St Mary the Virgin church, which serves as a landmark for the old village of Rotherhithe. This digital download is a significant record of London’s working river before the redevelopment of the Docklands, perfect to print for yourself as a piece of vintage maritime wall art.
