The Thailand Pavilion at the New York World’s Fair was one of the more admired architectural exhibits in the International Section, largely because it was built in the traditional prasat style—richly ornamented, steep-roofed, and visually striking against the otherwise modernist landscape of the fair.
After the fair closed in October 1965, the pavilion did not follow the usual fate of being scrapped or abandoned. Instead, officials arranged for it to be dismantled and transported to Montreal, where it was re-erected for Expo 67. The pavilion once again represented Thailand and retained much of its original design and character, serving both as an architectural attraction and as a cultural showcase featuring crafts, cuisine, and performances.
Despite its successful second life at Expo 67, the structure did not survive long afterwards. Once the exposition ended, it stood unused and deteriorating—maintenance of the ornate woodwork in Canada’s climate proved costly, and there was no permanent institutional sponsor to keep it open. By the early 1970s, the building was demolished, leaving no physical trace of what had been one of the few fair pavilions to serve at two major world expositions.
