The bridge was built to carry the A38 between Plymouth and Saltash, replacing the long-standing dependence on the Torpoint ferries. Construction began in 1959, and the completed suspension bridge opened in April 1961, transforming cross-Tamar travel and cementing the route as a vital road link between Devon and Cornwall.
Images like this capture the bridge at its most raw and industrial, before cables were fully tensioned and the deck installed, offering a rare glimpse into one of the South West’s most important post-war infrastructure projects.
