View along New Street in Ledbury in 1958, centred on the distinctive black-and-white timber-framed Talbot Hotel. The building is one of Ledbury’s most recognisable landmarks, its gabled frontage and exposed timbers reflecting the town’s strong medieval character.
Parked along the street is an Austin 10, while in the foreground a Bedford CA van is pulled in by the kerb, typical of the light commercial traffic that served small market towns in the post-war years. Street signage, narrow pavements and tightly packed buildings underline how little space New Street allowed for growing car ownership during the 1950s.
The Talbot Hotel survives today and remains a focal point of Ledbury’s historic centre, making this image a valuable record of the street before later traffic management and conservation measures reshaped the area.
