Sunbury-on-Thames station in 1982, seen from above with Class 508 unit 508007 standing at the platform on a Shepperton service. The photograph captures the station in a very workaday British Rail moment, with passengers leaving the train, others heading for the exit, and one man carrying a small piece of furniture past the “Way out” sign. The low station buildings, simple shelters and long retaining walls give the station a distinctly functional suburban look, while the unit’s bright yellow cab front stands out against the muted tones of the platforms and surrounding trees. It is a strong record of everyday commuter rail travel on the Shepperton branch in the early 1980s, before later changes in rolling stock and station presentation altered the feel of the line.
