A 1960s colour photo of the ornate exterior of the Strand Theatre on Aldwych, London, in 1962. The building features grand Edwardian architecture with decorative stonework and classical columns. Large red neon lettering on the facade advertises “THE AFFAIR,” starring Alec Clunes, Dorothy Alison, and Alan Dobie. The street level is busy with vintage British traffic, including a grey Ford Consul Capri parked in the foreground, several black Austin FX4 taxis, and a white Ford Anglia. Pedestrians in period attire, including a man in a trench coat, walk along the wide pavement, capturing the vibrant theatrical atmosphere of the West End during the early 1960s.
Today, the building is known as the Novello Theatre, having been renamed in 2005 to honour the composer Ivor Novello, who lived in a flat above the theatre for many years. The historic facade remains beautifully preserved and is a Grade II listed building, though the classic neon signage for 1960s productions has been replaced by modern digital displays and branding for long-running shows like Mamma Mia!. The busy Aldwych junction remains a central hub for London’s theatre district, though the vintage cars and black taxis seen here have been replaced by modern hybrid vehicles and red double-decker buses.
