This 1972 photograph shows Stepney Power Station looming above the north bank of the River Thames, its tall chimney and industrial buildings dominating a stretch of working riverside at Limehouse. The white cranes, timber wharfing and moored barges in the foreground preserve the atmosphere of old commercial London, while the riverside premises of W. J. Woodward Fisher Ltd can be seen at right, adding another layer of dockside business detail. What makes the view especially striking is the contrast between the heavy bulk of the power station and the smaller waterside buildings clustered beside it, all still tied closely to the working life of the Thames. More than just an industrial riverscape, the image captures a part of east London just before much of this long-established riverfront world disappeared under later redevelopment.
