Situated on the East Sands near the iconic cathedral ruins, Step Rock opened in 1933 as part of a growing movement across the UK to promote open-air swimming. The saltwater pool was cleverly constructed within the natural rock formations of the coastline, giving it its name and unique character. With its tiered stone seating, it offered spectacular views over the North Sea, creating an atmosphere unlike any traditional indoor pool.

Step Rock wasn’t just for casual swimming – it became an important venue for competitive events and hosted numerous local and regional swimming galas. In its heyday, it attracted large crowds, especially during the summer months, when both locals and holidaymakers flocked to the pool to swim, sunbathe, and socialise.

In the 1960s and 1970s, however, the popularity of outdoor pools began to decline. Harsh weather, rising maintenance costs, and changing leisure trends contributed to the pool’s gradual decline. By the early 1980s, Step Rock had closed, and the site was eventually cleared.
