This 1972 photograph looks south along Station Road in Hayes, with a red Routemaster double-decker on route 140 heading for Heathrow Airport Central and a pale green Vauxhall Viva estate in Granada livery in the foreground, probably a TV repairman as Granada were big in the TV rental business. The bus carries advertising for Henlys and T Motors, while the direction sign ahead points towards London Airport, Southall, Feltham and Hillingdon, placing the scene firmly within the west London road network of the period. The wet road surface, light traffic and view from inside another vehicle give the image the feel of an ordinary working-day journey rather than a posed street study. More than just a traffic scene, it captures the everyday look of suburban west London in 1972, when red buses and airport-bound traffic were a routine part of life around Hayes.
