This 1971 photograph shows a lively stretch of Station Parade in Kew, with Gladys Irenes at number 18 advertising itself as a “High Class Florists & Fruiterers” and offering wreaths, crosses and wedding bouquets made to order. Outside, flower trays and produce spill onto the pavement as shoppers gather at the frontage, while next door the butcher’s shop sign for I. Pether can be seen above a window displaying hanging meat and a painted “Free Bean Essex” notice. The scene is full of everyday suburban detail, from the shop signage and window displays to the period cars parked at the kerb, including a Mini and a light blue Ford Escort. More than just a row of local shops, it captures the look of an ordinary Kew shopping parade in 1971, when independent traders still dominated this part of west London.
