This 1977 photograph shows Star’s Restaurant on the corner of Soho Square and Soho Street in central London, its striped awnings and repeated signage giving the building a very characteristic late-1970s West End look. The street signs for Soho Square W1 and Soho Street W1 are both clearly visible on the corner, while the “No Motor Vehicles Except for access” sign adds another small but useful layer of period street detail. Bunting strung along the frontage and the mix of pedestrians passing below help capture the everyday atmosphere of Soho at a time when the district still balanced offices, restaurants and older small-scale commercial life. More than just a restaurant exterior, the image preserves a distinctly ordinary but highly searchable corner of 1970s central London, full of the kind of signage and street furniture that has largely disappeared.
