This 1972 photograph shows the Stardust Motel in Azusa, a classic example of mid-century Southern California roadside architecture along historic U.S. Route 66. The sharp folded-plate canopy, turquoise glass-block wall, low motel wings, and bright starburst neon sign were designed to catch the attention of motorists cruising Foothill Boulevard. Like many motor hotels of the era, the Stardust advertised modern comforts such as heated rooms, color televisions, phones, and a swimming pool — all proudly displayed on the marquee.
Remarkably, the motel is still in operation today under the same name and address: 666 E Foothill Blvd, Azusa, California. While the interior has been updated and the iconic sign has evolved over time, the building’s original footprint and mid-century character remain recognizable. More than fifty years later, the Stardust Motel continues to serve travelers, standing as one of the surviving remnants of classic Route 66 lodging culture in the San Gabriel foothills.
