View of Stanley Palace on Watergate Street in Chester, photographed in 1958. Built in 1591 and originally known as Derby House, Stanley Palace is one of Chester’s finest surviving Elizabethan timber-framed buildings, its black-and-white façade and jettied upper storeys standing out sharply against the surrounding street.
By the mid-20th century the building was already recognised for its historical importance and is now Grade II listed. Today it is owned by Chester City Council and managed by the Friends of Stanley Palace, with a long-standing reputation as one of the city’s most haunted properties adding to its notoriety.
Passing on the right is a Crosville Motor Services Bristol LL6B bus, built in 1952 with a 39-seat ECW body and carrying registration NFM 48. The bus remained in Crosville service until 1966, neatly anchoring the scene in the post-war years when buses still dominated urban transport.
