This 1965 photograph shows a Standard Vanguard parked neatly on the drive of a semi-detached house in what appears to be a relatively new post-war housing estate. Finished in a pale two-tone scheme with modest chrome trim, the car sits in a setting of clipped lawns, low timber fences and houses with distinctive tiled upper storeys, creating a very typical suburban British scene of the period. Other cars can be seen deeper in the estate, while the simple road layout, young gardens and practical house design all suggest a neighbourhood still settling into itself. More than a straightforward car portrait, the image captures the close link between post-war family motoring and the growth of new suburban housing in mid-1960s Britain.
