Staines station in 1982, with the plain brick British Rail frontage seen across the forecourt under a dull sky. The photograph is packed with useful period detail, including the large “British Rail Staines” sign above the entrance, a row of colourful travel and event posters on the wall, the red telephone box at the right-hand side, and a line of early-1980s cars parked across the front, among them a Vauxhall Victor, a white Sunbeam Stiletto and a pale Renault 5. The station building itself has a solid, almost municipal look, very different from more ornate Victorian railway architecture, and this everyday forecourt scene captures Staines as a workaday commuter station in the last years before the town’s name was officially altered to Staines-upon-Thames.
