This 1973 photograph looks into St Saviour’s Dock on the south bank of the River Thames, where tall warehouse blocks, timber wharfing and a forest of cranes still framed one of inner London’s last surviving dock inlets. The scene has a stark, almost canyon-like quality, with weathered brick elevations rising directly from the water and old loading gear still hanging above the dockside. By this date the area was already well into decline, yet the buildings and cranes still preserved the hard industrial character of riverside London before later redevelopment transformed so much of the Thames waterfront. More than just a dock view, the image captures the fading world of working wharves and warehouses at St Saviour’s Dock, one of the most atmospheric remnants of old commercial London on the river.
