Looking along St Peter’s Street in Canterbury during the 1950s, towards the medieval Westgate at the far end of the road. This was one of the city’s main shopping streets, busy with pedestrians and lined with a mix of Victorian and earlier commercial buildings.
On the left are branches of Worlds Stores and Prudential Assurance, both familiar names on British high streets in the mid-20th century. Their shopfronts, signage and display windows reflect the restrained, practical retail style of the period.
Much of St Peter’s Street has since been altered by redevelopment and traffic management, but the surviving Westgate still anchors the view, making this a valuable record of Canterbury’s post-war townscape before later changes reshaped the street.
