This 1974 photograph shows the west front of St Paul’s Cathedral still enveloped in scaffolding during the major restoration campaign of the period, with the Queen Anne statue standing before the entrance and crowds moving across the forecourt below. The dense framework of poles and platforms climbs almost the full height of the façade and towers, making the scale of the conservation work unmistakable and showing just how extensive the repairs had become by the mid-1970s. At street level, the buses, cars and pedestrians place the cathedral firmly within the everyday life of central London rather than apart from it. More than just a landmark view, the image records St Paul’s as an active restoration site in 1974, when one of London’s most important buildings was undergoing the long and necessary work of preservation.
