This 1973 photograph shows the west front of St Paul’s Cathedral covered in scaffolding during major restoration work, with the Queen Anne statue standing prominently in the foreground. The dense network of poles and platforms climbs across much of the façade and towers, underlining the scale of the conservation effort then under way to deal with the effects of pollution, weathering and earlier wartime damage. At ground level, the bicycle leaning against one of the bollards adds an unexpectedly ordinary touch to a scene dominated by monumental architecture and repair work. More than just a landmark view, the image records St Paul’s as a working restoration site, reminding us that even one of London’s most famous buildings required constant care to survive into the modern age.
