This 1971 photograph shows the west front of St Paul’s Cathedral wrapped in scaffolding during the Save St Paul’s Appeal, with the exhibition banner stretched prominently across the portico. In the foreground stands the statue of Queen Anne, the 1885 replacement by Richard Belt for Francis Bird’s original 1712 figure, linking the reign in which Wren’s cathedral was completed with this later campaign to preserve it. The image captures St Paul’s not as a static monument but as a building under active care, its stonework already suffering from pollution and wartime damage by the later twentieth century. More than just a view of the cathedral, it records a significant moment in the history of its restoration, when public fundraising and exhibition work were being used to help secure the future of one of London’s greatest landmarks.
