This photograph shows the area outside St Paul’s Cathedral, London, in 1969, with the cathedral’s west front and sculpted portico visible at right. In the foreground is a North Thames Gas Commer van, complete with period roof-mounted advertising, parked along the edge of the cathedral precinct.
Behind the vehicle are the modern office blocks of Paternoster Square, part of the post-war redevelopment carried out between 1961 and 1967. These concrete and glass buildings replaced bomb-damaged streets lost during the Second World War and represented a distinctly mid-20th-century approach to urban planning in the City of London.
The statue of Queen Anne stands prominently in front of the cathedral, surrounded by bollards and railings, while pedestrians move across the paved forecourt. The scene captures a brief moment in the evolving history of the area, as this version of Paternoster Square would itself be demolished and completely redesigned in later decades.
