This 1972 photograph looks west along Cannon Street towards St Paul’s Cathedral, with Wren’s great dome rising above a busy City of London streetscape of buses, cars, taxis and office blocks. The cathedral dominates the view, but the image is equally rich in everyday period detail, from the red London buses and black cab to the mix of early-1970s traffic moving through the commercial heart of the capital. The contrast between St Paul’s monumental Baroque architecture and the plain post-war office buildings on either side gives the scene much of its character, showing the old and new City pressed tightly together. More than just a view of a famous landmark, it is a strong record of central London in 1972, when the cathedral still towered above a street scene full of ordinary working-day movement.
