St Pancras station on Euston Road in 1971, with the great Gothic frontage of the Midland Grand Hotel dominating the scene while the station clock tower stands wrapped in scaffolding behind. Along the hoardings at street level are large adverts for Texaco, Players No. 6 cigarettes, Maxwell House coffee and Piccadilly No. 7 cigarettes, adding another strong layer of period detail to the view. Red Routemaster double-decker buses on route 73 pass along the broad roadway beside a mix of contemporary cars and pedestrians, while George Gilbert Scott’s richly detailed brickwork, spires and pointed arches rise above the traffic. It is a striking view of St Pancras before its later restoration, capturing the building at a time when it was still imposing but noticeably more worn and workaday than it appears today.
