St Mary’s Southgate Church in Crawley, photographed in 1959, shortly after completion. Designed in a restrained modern style, the church reflects the architectural language of Crawley’s New Town era, with clean brickwork, broad windows and a low, horizontal emphasis typical of late-1950s civic and religious buildings.
The slim spire rising above the roofline provides a traditional focal point, while the open setting and newly landscaped surroundings underline the planned nature of Southgate as a post-war residential district. St Mary’s served the growing population of families moving into Crawley during its rapid expansion in the late 1950s and early 1960s, and remains a landmark of the town’s New Town identity.
