View across Senate House Hill in Cambridge in 1958, centred on the Church of St Mary the Great, commonly known as Great St Mary’s. As the University Church, it has long been at the ceremonial heart of Cambridge, closely associated with graduations, sermons and academic life.
The photograph was taken from the entranceway of the King’s College Porters’ Lodge on King’s Parade. To the left, partly obscured by trees, is the Senate House, where degree ceremonies have been held since the 18th century.
Bicycles leaned against railings, pedestrians crossing the gravelled forecourt and modest saloon cars along the edge of the scene capture everyday university life in the late 1950s, before later traffic restrictions and changes to the historic core of Cambridge.
