This photograph shows St Martin’s Place, London, in 1966, centred on the Edith Cavell Memorial, the granite monument commemorating the British nurse executed during the First World War. The memorial’s carved inscriptions, including the words “Devotion” and “Humanity”, are clearly visible on the stonework.
To the left, a red London Routemaster bus passes through the junction, while pedestrians cross the road in front of the monument. In the background, the globe-topped building bearing the General Electric Company name dominates the skyline, a familiar landmark of central London during the mid-20th century.
The surrounding streetscape features traditional shopfronts, period street furniture, and everyday foot traffic, capturing the character of London’s West End in the 1960s, close to Trafalgar Square and Charing Cross.
