This 1984 photograph shows a cluster of boats waiting at the entrance to St Katharine Docks. Beyond the lock is the large former warehouse building with its clock tower, part of the dock complex that had already begun its transformation from a working riverside site into a marina and leisure destination. The crowded mix of cabin cruisers, sailing craft and small motor vessels in the foreground gives the scene a busy, slightly bottlenecked feel, very different from the older commercial dock traffic that once used these waters. It is a strong record of St Katharine Docks in the middle of its post-industrial reinvention, when the historic dock buildings remained but the basin had taken on a new life as a central London mooring and visitor attraction.
