This 1956 view shows the remains of St James’ Church at the junction of St James Street and Woolcomber Street in Dover. Originally damaged in 1916 when a German seaplane dropped bombs on the town, the church was restored and reopened in 1931, only to suffer further severe damage from German artillery during the Second World War. By the early 1950s the tower had become unstable and collapsed in 1951. Rather than full rebuilding, the site was stabilised and left as a “tidy ruin”, creating the evocative shell seen here, framed by later residential buildings rising behind it.
In the foreground is a domed public pissoir, a men’s public lavatory typical of mid-20th-century British towns, now long removed. Its presence anchors the scene firmly in everyday post-war street life, contrasting sharply with the centuries-old stonework of the ruined church behind.
