This authentic 1960s colour photograph captures St Giles Cripplegate church in London in 1963, standing as a solitary survivor of wartime bombing. The image shows the historic medieval stone church with its prominent red brick tower top and clock face, surrounded by the cleared, “grubby” landscape of the Cripplegate area following post-war clearances. To the right, a large arched window is boarded up with orange-brown panels, and the foreground reveals the exposed white-tiled walls of demolished basements. This view predates the construction of the Barbican Estate, which would eventually rise around the church and integrate it into a modern residential complex. The church is famous as the burial place of John Milton and the site of Oliver Cromwell’s wedding, making its survival through the Blitz particularly significant.
