This 1963 photograph shows St Clement Danes rising above the Strand, its Wren tower and clock faces standing clear against the sky while the long body of the church stretches away behind the roadside trees. The view has a strong early-1960s London character, with a row of parked scooters and motorcycles at the kerb, a black taxi passing in front of the church, and the corner of a red double-decker bus just entering on the right. To the left, the memorial statuary and the dark Gothic spire of the Royal Courts of Justice help place the scene firmly in this historic Strand and Aldwych setting. Rebuilt after severe wartime bomb damage and rededicated in 1958 as the Central Church of the Royal Air Force, St Clement Danes here appears before later cleaning and traffic changes altered the look of this part of central London.
