This authentic 1960s color photograph captures the Spirit of Transportation sculpture by Marshall Fredericks, located outside the Cobo Center (now Huntington Place) in Detroit, Michigan, in 1967. The bronze work depicts a stylized figure carrying a canoe, representing the history of travel and the importance of the Detroit River to the region’s development. The sculpture is positioned atop a tall black pillar within a fountain, with jets of water cascading into a pool below. In the background, the modern glass and marble facade of the exhibition center reflects the surrounding urban environment. While the sculpture has since been relocated during subsequent renovations of the center, this image preserves its original mid-century setting.
