Looking north across Southwark Bridge in 1976, this fine view captures part of the Lord Mayor’s procession behind a mounted police officer. The ceremonial carriages, with their scarlet-coated attendants and pairs of horses, bring a flash of tradition to an otherwise businesslike weekday scene. Dominating the left-hand side is Vintry House in Queen Street Place, one of the large office blocks that once marked the City end of the bridge, while farther back the skyline is filled with more post-war commercial buildings. The contrast between the formal pageantry of the procession and the hard-edged office architecture behind gives the photograph much of its character, capturing old civic London moving through the modern City.
