A view of historic ships moored at the South Street Maritime Museum in New York City, photographed in December 1972. In the foreground, the red-painted bow and wheelhouse of a smaller working vessel sit alongside a larger black-hulled ship, with masts, rigging and deck fittings filling the frame and emphasising the industrial character of the waterfront.
Beyond the ships, the stone towers and suspension cables of the Brooklyn Bridge rise across the East River, clearly identifying the location as the South Street Seaport area of Lower Manhattan. The photograph captures the museum and surrounding docks during the early 1970s, when preserved vessels shared the river with commercial traffic and the waterfront retained much of its traditional working appearance prior to later redevelopment.
