South Kensington station in 1973, showing the Underground platforms in the middle of major rebuilding or repair work, with long runs of corrugated hoardings, scaffolding, exposed iron columns and stripped-back platform structures lining the far side of the tracks. The photograph is full of useful period detail, including the South Kensington roundel fixed to the temporary fencing, the dark tunnel mouth in the distance, the platform-edge warning surface, overhead lamps and the partial destination board at left. It is a stark and unusually industrial view of a station more often remembered for its elegant canopies and Victorian detailing, capturing South Kensington at a moment when its familiar appearance was partly hidden behind sheet metal, timber screens and construction works.
