The scene is full of useful period detail, including the enamel-style Platform 2 sign, London Underground roundels on the far side, poster panels along the opposite platform, the cast-iron canopy supports, hanging lamps, gravel ballast between the rails and the worn platform edging. The high retaining wall with its repeated brick arches and the taller buildings rising above it add to the enclosed, slightly sooty character of this part of the station, while the coats, handbag and shopping bag of the waiting passengers give the photograph a very everyday early-1970s London feel.
