The 20″ gauge railway opened in 1960 adjacent to US-2, about 6 miles west of town, providing tourists with a scenic three-mile excursion to Silver Lake. The featured engine is a notable C.P. Huntington model built by Chance Amusements; this specific unit was one of their early productions, designated as number 4. The archival image showcases the locomotive’s vibrant red, blue, and gold livery, complete with a classic brass bell and an American flag mounted to the cowcatcher. The railway was a popular roadside attraction in the Upper Peninsula for two decades before it closed in the 1980s.
