Shepherd Market, Mayfair, London, in 1976, with what appears to be a town crier in traditional dress walking through the foreground carrying a handbell. His tricorne hat, ornate waistcoat, black-and-gold robe and stockings make him a striking figure against the everyday shopfronts behind, where businesses including R. S. Joseph, a high-class tobacconist and confectioner, help preserve the area’s long-standing village-like character. The old-style lamp standard, handcart, postcard racks and narrow run of small shops all add to the sense of Shepherd Market as a tucked-away enclave within central Mayfair. It is a wonderfully characterful street scene, mixing ceremony and ordinary street life in a part of London that still retained much of its old-fashioned charm in the mid-1970s.
