View along the narrow village road in Fulking in 1959, centred on the Shepherd & Dog Inn, a long-established South Downs pub tucked against the rising hillside. The flint boundary wall and slate-hung upper storeys are typical of Sussex village architecture, with small-paned windows and low rooflines reinforcing the intimate scale of the setting.
At the time this photograph was taken, the inn occupied a more compact footprint. The building to the right—now absorbed into the pub—was later incorporated as the Shepherd & Dog expanded, reflecting its growing popularity as a destination for walkers and visitors to the Downs. Much of the original fabric remains visible, making this a useful record of the pub before its later enlargement.
