This authentic 1960s colour photograph captures a detailed view of the Shell Centre under construction on London’s South Bank in 1961. The image focuses on a lower section of the Portland stone-clad building, featuring an open timber pergola structure on the roof level. A large, detailed “Sir Robert McAlpine & Sons Ltd” contractor’s board stands prominently in the foreground, listing the numerous architects, engineers, and sub-contractors involved in this massive post-war project. A smaller sign simply reads “Shell Offices” beside the perimeter hoarding. In the lower-left corner, several dark-coloured vintage cars are parked along the construction fence, while the towering main block of the centre rises in the background. This digital download is an excellent record of London’s mid-century building boom and corporate history, perfect to print for yourself as a piece of vintage architectural wall art.
